If you're touring preschools in Aledo this month, here are the 12 questions that will tell you more in five minutes than reading their website for an hour. Bring this list to every tour — ours included.

1. Who is the director, and how long have they been at this exact location?

This is the single most important question. Directors set the tone of a school. High director turnover is the single biggest predictor of inconsistent care. A long-tenured director who knows every child's name is the green flag you want. Ask, and listen for how comfortable the answer feels.

2. What curriculum do you use — can I see it?

If the answer is vague (‘we do our own thing’, ‘play-based’ with no framework named), push harder. If they name a real curriculum (like Frog Street, Creative Curriculum, HighScope, Montessori), great — ask how they implement it day to day.

3. May I meet a teacher in my child's age group right now?

If the answer is ‘teachers can't be interrupted during class hours,’ that's a stock answer. A confident director will walk you in and introduce you to a teacher by name — even briefly. The teacher's reaction tells you everything about staff morale.

4. What's your teacher-to-child ratio in my child's classroom, today?

Confident schools know this number cold. They should also know the Texas state minimum for that age group. Compare the two. Tighter ratios are especially valuable in infant and young toddler rooms.

5. How do you specifically prepare children for Aledo ISD kindergarten?

A generic answer about ‘kindergarten readiness’ is not the answer you want. You want specifics about what Aledo ISD kindergarten teachers actually expect from incoming students.

6. May I see the parent app you use? What will I see today after drop-off?

Modern preschools use a parent communication app (Brightwheel, ProCare, Kangarootime, Lillio). Ask to see the parent view. You should see photos, daily report, schedule, and direct messaging. Paper sheets stapled to a backpack are not the standard anymore.

7. What does a typical day look like, hour by hour?

A director who can walk you through a real Tuesday in your child's age room knows their school. Listen for balance: structured learning, free play, outdoor time, meals, rest, and warm one-on-one moments.

8. What's tuition for my child's age group, full-time?

Schools that won't share tuition until you ‘apply’ are using a tactic. You should leave a tour knowing the number.

9. Who owns this school? Are decisions made locally or at corporate?

Both family-owned and franchise models exist. Neither is automatically better. But you should know which one you're choosing. Family-owned schools are typically run by a director who lives in your community and makes decisions locally.

10. May I see your Google reviews? Can I talk to a current family?

Real reviews from named local parents matter more than a generic ‘5-star’ badge. A confident school will happily connect you with a current family.

11. What's your discipline approach?

Listen for words like ‘positive guidance,’ ‘redirection,’ ‘naming feelings,’ ‘modeling.’ A school that talks about ‘consequences’ without warmth or about ‘time-out’ as the primary tool is using an outdated approach. The current research-backed approach is calm adults modeling and teaching emotional regulation.

12. How easy is it to schedule a tour? How quickly did they respond?

Friction is information. If a school respects your time at the front door, they're going to respect it at pickup. Self-service tour booking, fast email replies, and a director who'll text you back are all green flags.

Tour two or three Aledo preschools with these 12 questions in your phone. The right school will answer every one without dodging. If you'd like to bring this list to Grace, we'd love to walk you through every classroom and meet the teachers your child would actually be with.
