Comparing Preschool Tuition in Aledo: The Math Most Parents Skip

Why the cheaper childcare center can cost more than the better preschool.

You tour two Aledo preschools. One quotes a weekly tuition rate that's a little lower than the other — let's say five to ten percent. The gap feels meaningful, so you lean toward the lower number. Most parents do. And most parents are doing the wrong math.

Weekly tuition is the headline number. It's the number on the brochure, the number the front desk hands you on a printed sheet, the number you tell your spouse on the drive home. It's also the number that conceals the most.

Aledo families today choose from a wide spectrum of early-childhood options: in-home daycares, large-format childcare centers, franchised brand locations, and family-owned preschools and schools. Most of them quote tuition in similar units — a dollar amount per week. Most of them are not selling the same product. Some are providing supervised care. Some are providing structured early education. They're listed side-by-side in Google Maps, but they aren't the same thing. The math you need to compare them isn't about the headline number. It's about what the headline number actually buys.

Here's the truth: two centers with similar weekly rates can cost wildly different amounts per year — and the gap usually isn't in the direction parents assume. The lower-priced daycare is often, on a per-day-of-actual-care basis, the more expensive choice than the better preschool down the road.

This post walks through the math no one runs at the front desk, and the criteria that separate a real school from a childcare facility that markets itself like one. By the end you'll have a one-page formula you can take to any Aledo tour and compare honestly, in the same units.

The closure multiplier (a.k.a. the silent cost inflator)

The fastest way to make a "cheaper" preschool more expensive is for it to be closed more often. Every day the school is closed is a day you either pay for backup care, take off work, or call in a family favor. None of those are free.

Aledo preschools vary more here than parents realize. Some are open 250+ days a year. Some are open 215. That's seven full weeks of difference — closures for spring break, fall break, Thanksgiving week, winter break, summer reset, teacher in-service days, franchise-corporate training days, and floating holidays you didn't know existed until they show up on the school calendar in October.

Let's walk through a hypothetical example — easy round numbers, illustrative math only.

A note on the numbers below

The dollar amounts in the examples that follow are illustrative only. They are chosen for round-number readability — to make the formula easy to follow. They do not represent Grace Learning Tree's actual tuition, and they do not represent the actual tuition of any other Aledo preschool or daycare. Use the formula, not the example dollar amounts, when comparing the schools you tour.

Hypothetical School A — "the cheaper one" (illustrative example)

Weekly tuition: $X
Open days per year: 215 (about 43 weeks)
Annual tuition: $X × 43 weeks = annual total
Cost per open day: annual total ÷ 215 open days

Hypothetical School B — "the more expensive one" (illustrative example)

Weekly tuition: $Y (slightly higher than School A)
Open days per year: 250 (about 50 weeks)
Annual tuition: $Y × 50 weeks = annual total
Cost per open day: annual total ÷ 250 open days

Because School B is open 35 additional days a year, the gap in cost-per-actual-day is almost always smaller than the gap in weekly rate suggests — and sometimes flips the other direction entirely. School B is also 35 days you don't have to scramble for backup care.

Now layer in what backup care actually costs. Drop-in childcare days run into the dozens or low hundreds of dollars per day in Parker County depending on age and provider. Across 35 additional closure days a year — even if you only need to cover half of them — the real cost of the "cheaper" school can rise meaningfully when measured honestly. The weekly rate doesn't show you any of that.

Most parents never run this math. The school doesn't run it for you either.

The kind of childcare center that…

…closes for "corporate training" weeks, franchise-imposed holiday breaks, in-service days scheduled around the franchise system rather than the local director's judgment, and seasonal weeks where you're either out of childcare or paying camp tuition on top of regular tuition. They may call themselves a school. The calendar tells the truth.

What a real school does instead

Operates a real full-year educational calendar. Closes for the federal holidays and a small number of well-planned in-service days. Tells you the exact calendar before you ask. Doesn't apologize for being open when other centers aren't — that's the product.

The hours-per-day multiplier

Preschool A is open 7:30am to 5:30pm. Preschool B is open 7:00am to 6:00pm. On paper, that's just an hour different per day. Over the course of a year, it's about 250 extra hours of childcare at School B — and if you've ever paid an hourly rate for after-care or paid a late-pickup fee, you know how that math compounds.

Most Aledo working parents need 9–10 hours of coverage per day to handle a Fort Worth or DFW commute on top of an 8-to-5 job. A preschool that closes its doors at 5:30 — and charges a late fee starting at 5:31 — is a school that hasn't actually solved your problem. It's a school that's solved a smaller, easier problem and is asking you to pay full price for it.

Late-pickup fees compound quietly

Many centers charge a per-minute late fee starting the moment they close. If you arrive a few minutes past closing several times in a month from a traffic-jammed I-30 commute, the per-minute charges compound — quietly, on the invoice that comes home Friday. Across a year of normal life, late fees at hard-cutoff centers can add hundreds of dollars to your real cost. That's a structural cost of the school's hours, not a personal failing of yours. Ask: what's your late-fee threshold, and what's the per-minute rate?

What's included vs. billed separately

"Tuition" doesn't mean the same thing at every school. At some Aledo preschools, the weekly rate is genuinely all-in. At others, it's the floor — and a half-dozen line items get layered on top through the year.

Here's what to ask about explicitly, before signing anything:

The "is this included" checklist

  • Daily meals and snacks (or charged separately?)
  • All learning materials, art supplies, manipulatives
  • Curriculum (named program like Frog Street, or generic?)
  • Diapers, wipes, sunscreen (for infants/toddlers)
  • Bedding for nap time (or do you bring sheets weekly?)
  • Field trip costs
  • Holiday parties, picture day, special events
  • Curriculum supplements (extra music, gym, language classes)
  • Required uniforms (some centers require purchase)
  • One-time enrollment fee
  • Annual re-enrollment fee
  • Annual supply fee or materials fee
  • Holiday-week camps (when school is closed but you still need care)
  • Late pickup fees — what's the threshold and the per-minute rate?
  • Sibling discount (if you have or plan to have a second child)

Run this list at every tour. If the school can't give you a clear answer on any line item, that's the answer. A school confident in its pricing has nothing to hide about what's included.

The franchise tuition trap

Franchise preschools operate under a different financial logic than family-owned schools. Tuition rates are typically set or guided by corporate headquarters, not the local director. Annual increases are scheduled, and the local director doesn't have the authority to negotiate them down. The local director also doesn't keep the increase. It funnels up to royalties, brand fees, and corporate margins.

This matters for two reasons. First, the tuition you sign up for in Year 1 isn't the tuition you'll pay in Year 3. Ask any franchise center for their five-year historical increase pattern. (Watch the body language when you ask.) Second, when corporate raises rates, the local school can't absorb the increase even if local economics would have allowed it. The number goes up because the franchise system requires it to go up.

The kind of franchise center that…

…builds scheduled annual tuition increases into its corporate model, requires the local director to follow corporate calendar templates regardless of what the local community needs, and treats families as customers of a brand rather than members of a local school community. It may have "school" in the brand name. Look at how decisions actually get made.

What a real local school does instead

Sets its tuition based on local economics and what it actually costs to run an excellent school in Aledo. Adjusts when it has to — and explains why, in a parent letter, signed by the director who knows you by name and is in the building every day.

Quality differences that don't show up in the price

Two preschools can quote identical weekly tuition and deliver wildly different experiences. The price tag flattens differences that matter enormously for your child's first five years.

Named curriculum vs. "we do our own thing"

This is the line that quietly separates a real preschool or school from a childcare center that markets like one. A named, researched curriculum — Frog Street, Creative Curriculum, HighScope, Montessori with credentialed teachers, The Creative Curriculum for Preschool, or another well-documented framework — is a real difference. These programs have decades of research behind them, published evidence of effectiveness, public scope-and-sequence documents, and clear mappings to state early-learning standards (in Texas, the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines). You can Google any of them and read for yourself how they teach.

So when you ask a center "what curriculum framework do you use?" — listen for one of these clear, recognizable names. If a center can't name the framework, or if "the curriculum" turns out to be a collection of Pinterest activities staff pieces together each week, that's a quality gap the tuition rate doesn't reflect. The center may still be a wonderful, loving place for your child. But it's providing supervised care, not structured early education — and those are different products at the same price point.

Watch for the "it's proprietary" dodge

There is a specific evasion to listen for here. When a center can't name a published curriculum, the most common fallback is some version of: "We have our own proprietary curriculum," or "It's based on our company's unique approach," or "It's a blend of methods we've developed in-house." This is sometimes legitimate. More often, it's the linguistic exit ramp a center takes when there isn't a real framework to describe.

If you hear "proprietary," don't accept it as the end of the conversation. A real curriculum — proprietary or not — has answers to follow-up questions. Ask:

  • "Who developed it, and what's their background in early-childhood research?"
  • "What evidence or studies support that it works?"
  • "Can I see your scope and sequence — what skills you teach, in what order, by what age?"
  • "How does it map to the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines?" (This is a real public document the state issues. Real curriculum maps to it cleanly. Improvised activity collections don't.)
  • "Can I sit in a classroom for ten minutes and see the curriculum actually being taught?"

A school confident in its curriculum will answer all five questions directly, with documents on hand, and invite you into the classroom. A center that's hiding behind "proprietary" will get vague, redirect, or change the subject. The vagueness is the answer. More on what a named curriculum actually means →

Director on-site vs. director as figurehead

Is the school director in the building every day, in the classrooms, knowing every child by name? Or is the director a regional manager who covers three locations and shows up Thursdays? This is the single biggest variable in whether problems get caught early or fester. The price tag doesn't tell you which model the school uses. The tour does.

Teachers vs. staff — and how long they've been there

Notice the language used to describe the people in the classroom. A school refers to teachers. A daycare often refers to staff. The vocabulary tells you how the leadership thinks about the work happening with your child each day. Then ask: "How long have your lead teachers been here?" In a healthy school, you'll hear 3, 5, 8, 12 years. In a struggling center, you'll hear "we just hired her in March." High turnover is a sign that the working conditions aren't what they need to be — and turnover affects your child, who has to attach to a new face every few months.

Facility — what's actually in the space

Square footage. Outdoor play space. Whether there's a dedicated music room, art space, library nook. Indoor gross-motor space for rainy days. These don't show up on the tuition sheet, but they show up in your child's day, every day. Tour the building. Walk the perimeter. See what's there.

The honest comparison formula

When you compare two schools using this number, the picture often flips. The school you thought was cheaper isn't. The school you thought was expensive is actually a better value per day of real childcare — and you can stop feeling guilty about paying for it.

When you tour, watch for this

The front desk will give you the weekly tuition number. Smart parents ask for more:

  1. "Can I see your full school calendar for the year?" Watch how readily they hand it over. A confident school has it in a folder, ready.
  2. "Can I see your complete fee schedule in writing?" Every line item, all-in. If they can only give you the weekly rate verbally, you don't have a full quote.
  3. "How often have rates increased over the last three years?" Especially important at franchise centers. The honest answer beats the optimistic one.
  4. "How long have your lead teachers been here?" If they can't answer quickly, that's the answer.
  5. "What's NOT included in tuition that I should budget for?" An honest school will name three or four things. A school that says "nothing extra" hasn't thought about it carefully — or isn't telling you.

The school that gives you direct, complete answers without flinching is the school that has nothing to hide. The school that gets vague, or rushes past these questions, or "would need to check with corporate" — that's the school whose tuition number is hiding more than it's telling.
